About Me
I am farmer, feminist and activist. This might sound radical, but it simply means that I dedicate my time to fair and real food and farming for as many people as possible.
I build agroecological gardens and I teach, write and talk about food sovereignty, selfsufficiency and regeneration. Regeneration of the relationship to ourselves, each other and the natural world that we are part of and depend upon.
As a child my favorite place was our vegetable garden, and that love remains to this day. I studied forestry and nature management at the Wageningen University and Research, finishing my Bsc with a minor in communication and education.
Looking for a more practical approach I started my first small business, focussing on primary school projects around food and as part of the local Transition Towns group, building a community food forest in Wageningen. In my 30's I spend nearly six years in the UK, where I took part in the wonderful and practical Soil Association Apprenticeship at The Organic Farm Shop in Cirencester. I also build several gardens and got connected to the Land Workers Alliance, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and several real farming networks.
Back in the Netherlands I became a member of Toekomstboeren, where I was part of the board for a few years, founded a CSA garden in Amersfoort and co-founded the Dutch CSA network.
During an international CSA conference with Urgenci I met Mathias v. Mirbach, founder of the pioneering CSA farm Kattendorfer Hof near Hamburg. In 2020 I moved to Germany, where I now live and work at the country estate Neverstaven, between Hamburg and Lubeck.
You can see more of my garden work on Instagram: Jolkesnaturalgardening, I occasionally write a blog: https://realfoodfarming.wordpress.com/
You can book a workshop or event at the gardens, ask me for articles, events and workshops or we can discuss how you can make your own garden more natural, practical, resilient and edible.
